Hm... let' me tell you the reality, Johnny boy: Put a woman on the defendant side, 6 out of 10 times she's absolved even in the face of overwhelming evidence. The other 4 times she's getting a sentence 40% lighter than men would for the same crime and with the same record. If the accuser is a male and the defendant a female, then it's instant absolution even if there's evidence. I can give you the example of every female rapist and child molester ever. Women have been granted legal immunity to crimes of a sexual nature, domestic violence against men - in which case it's the man who's always assumed guilty and even law enforcement confirms this - and are encouraged by the legal system to lie and slander their male counterparts in divorce and custody cases. While I agree with what you say here most of the time, your bigotry against straight Caucasian men is painfully obvious.

Having recently survived the jury selection process in North Carolina I'll say this... the racial breakdown of my county is 49% white, 35%black, 14% hispanic/latino, and 2% other. The composition of those summoned for jury duty was about the same. Each juror was asked exactly the same questions and out of a pool of 50 by the time a jury of 12 jurors and 2 alternates was selected all but ONE African American had been excused. Before you say this is proof of racism, the prosecutor was white, the defendant AND defense attorney were black and they were both tossing African American jury candidates with impunity. I don't think there's a socially correct way to describe what the district attorney was trying to explain in the film about jury selection, he did an awful job. But the fact is jury selection is all about winning. Winning a conviction for the prosecution, winning an acquittal for the defendant. Is the system flawed?, yes. Is it always about racism?, no. It's about winning and that means making smart jury selection decisions.

Please Do A Piece on Michael Jackson Hi, I’m writing to you because Last Week Tonight as opposed to other such shows actually cares about issues rather than chasing the headlines. It has been 11 years since Michael Jackson passed away yet to this day what the common consensus is that he is a taboo subject for many. I recall you guys once did a piece on Public Shaming. Michael Jackson was a genius, an abused child. He was strange. He was one of the few major stars from the 80s who came out of the 80s without a heroine addiction. He in his own way did many, Many strange things, but so do most other superstars. And more than others he actually cared. About children, about the earth. About the issues we are discussing to this day. While Icons like Freddy Mercury, Elvis Pressley, Prince, Beetles and many more are known for their good works, Michael is known for the something which he has repeatedly been acquitted for. It’s the truth that anyone looking for will find instantly but due to the “where there is smoke there is a fire” narrative, even 11 years after his death, the new media treats him like a criminal. All his trial pages are open for the public to read. He WAS weird. Making a ranch called neverland, hanging out with children. Trusting people he shouldn’t. But I urge you please cover him, hear beyond the noise like you guys often do. The most successful African American Artist of all time was a humble man child, who respected women, loved children and cared about our environment. He was not a heroine junkie, a private man who did not share his disease even all the way back in 1993 even though he was accused of wanting to become a “White Man”. He was eccentric. Hanging out with animals and caring about them. theobjectivestandard.com/2020/02/justice-for-michael-jackson/ This article covers multiple sources, some of which I had read previously. Michael Jackson was a multi talented millionaire pop star, who was not an alcoholic, was a caring father, a filial son, Treated women with respect, cared about the planet and it’s beings. The press that constantly kept DASHING him, had found a way to subvert their guilt. All those years of calling him a “Jacko”, “monkey” and many more hurtful things was justified if he was a paedophile. They NEEDED him to be guilty. Such a man cannot exist in Hollywood. Such public shaming had allowed and to this day allows Michael to be a victim to all this slander. Please do a piece, if not one that exonerates him then one that once and for all cements the fact the Michael Jackson, the greatest pop star, the first African American Idol was a paedophile. Not through unknown sources or flimsy headlines but through concrete proof. A news echoing in a closed chamber will not reach anyone, most fans who what to know the truth know it, other people will read the headlines but not the explanations. It’s about time the general public knows. Please do a piece on Michael, the blatant mistreatment by the media, The systematic racism he faced during his trials. Please don’t let the first African American Singer be remembered for the things he did not do, He was weird, weird enough to annoy Freddy Mercury with Bubbles feedbacks, weird enough to let kids crack raw eggs over Michael Jackson, Weird enough to play water balloons with children. But he was not a paedophile and the world needs to acknowledge that. He was in no way a “Perfect Human” but he tried his best to live right and we should not punish him for doing that. On this year please exonerate this Black man, the Justice System has done it two decades ago, it’s about time everyone else does. Please do a piece on Michael Jackson. #spreadtheawareness #justiceformichael #hedeservedbetter

Bias is a real problem with juries and it comes from all races. It can be like what John talked about with white people generally finding minorities guilty more often (or the opposite). Yet, it can also be in the form of minorities being less likely to convict members of the same race because of racial and cultural ties. Take, for example, the OJ case, black jurors openly admitted that they made their decision solely to spite white people. I will say that this case could easily be an outlier based on the public aspect. As much as I would like racial bias to stop existing, it realistically probably won’t. The best thing we can do is make our jury system truly random like is purports to be. Surprisingly, I found what the DA said about picking less smart black women the most problematic. Surely, smarter people are better as they are more capable of avoiding bias right? Perhaps this thought process has more to do with the systems natural tendency to pick people who are ‘dumber’ as they cannot think as independently, and are less likely to question the arguments made in court. I see this expressed with some comments of people saying that scientists are far less likely to be picked. Realistically, the system and these lawyers do want the jurors to be biased, just in a way that benefits them. Sadly, I do not have a great solution to find justice in a fair, yet effective way. Still, it’s easy to see that there are major problems with the status quo and it’s not just racist people.

Technically bias can be reduced by making people spend time with other minorities. They've done studies on this and in group/out group bias is much stronger when you're only around people of your in group, even when the in group in question can be something as arbitrary as being assigned garlic bread in a 'which Italian food are you?' quiz. Basically, humans are weird and are constantly forming boxes in their heads and exposure to people from other boxes reduces bias towards the entire group.

Jury selection. It happens in the UK too. At the Old Bailey. I turned up for two days dressed in jacket and tie, and realised after sitting on 2 selection panels, I was not being selected. Neither prosecuting nor defending barristers wanted intelligent jurors. I observed who was selected. The next day, I turned up unkempt, in jeans and tee shirt and gave the impression of being disinterested and bored, and immediately got onto a jury. I got to be the foreman by putting myself forward and controlled the way the other 11 acted. Most jurors just wanted to get home as soon as possible. There were 2 brothers as defendants. One committed robbery, the other just was led into the act by his elder brother.. I influenced the others to be undecided about and acquit the one who was doing this to protect a younger brother (who was not in the trial because of his age), and to convict the violent brother. It was obvious the police had been after the brothers for some time, and there were other prosecutions pending for them. Because of the system, I guessed that they both would both be going down to do some jail time. I also realised that a couple of jurors had been "got at" outside the court either by police, or the prosecution lawyers, and were very afraid of not convicting. and I couldn't persuade these two, so we had to get a majority verdict. It was hard work. The Policemen as witnesses were lying through their teeth, by appearing to be incompetent, forgetful, and sharing a notebook. The Judge seemed to dismiss evidence from other witnesses as being unreliable, on the basis of them being themselves part of the society that the defendants came from. I was glad to try to redress the balance. The system was not a fair one.

I think this is more of an issue with the adversarial legal system than anything else. They are striking black jurors because in their bigotry they think the black jurors will be more harsh. A lawyer shouldn't be trying to convict someone and a lawyer shouldn't be trying to exonerate someone. Lawyers should be doing their best to seek the truth. The adversarial system breeds corruption and turns court cases into dick measuring contests for lawyers. Whoever has the biggest dick gets to either put someone in jail or protect someone from jail whether they are innocent or guilty.

Controversial opinion: Striking jurors for their race should be perfectly fine. Reasoning: Given there is a pool that is fairly representative of the actual community, being of any race is just as much an indicator for impartiality as social status, religious views, fashion choice and other outward presentory facetts attorneys use. So either it should be allowed to use *any* reason - or striking a juror should *not* be possible *at all* - and not to allow any jurors to be removed is really dangerous, because your conviction could go down to the luck of the draw. Hence, I believe that it should be perfectly okay to use race as a reason to remove a juror. This obviously goes both ways, I hope that much is clear. So a black defendant must be entitled to remove just as many white jurors as the DA is allowed to remove black jurors. Again, I want to stress: This only works if the pool is fair to begin with - and both sides have equal opportunity to remove. But if those are given, I don't think making one reason "not okay" and every other reason "okay" does only one thing: breed more controversy - and nothing else.
