10 Times Hey Arnold! Got DEPRESSINGLY DARK
Hey Arnold! was one of the best nickelodeon shows from many of our childhoods. However, as kids, many of us overlooked some of the profound themes that existed throughout the story. At times, the show shined a light on dark realities that exist in the real world. Abandonment, addiction, negligence, war, poverty and crime. Hey Arnold! was an incredibly mature show that got quite dark at times. Today we're counting down the 10 Times Hey Arnold! Got DEPRESSINGLY DARK. #HeyArnold #Nickelodeon

The entire cartoon is grimdark. But it taught us so many important lessons as kids. I'm 28 now and writing a novel. I honestly think that without this show and others like it, I'd be in the ground, at a job I hated or worse.

I think the darkest episode I saw was the veteran's day episode where Gerald talks about how much of a hero his dad was in Vietnam, only to be told his dad was an army desk worker. Gerald loses respect for his father and his dad eventually tells him the reason he was place there was because he accidentally shot one of his fellow soldiers during a training exercise.

As a kid watching the show growing up. What was different about the show and why it interested me was how it was set in a working/middle-class NYC community, his grandparents were the main adults in his upbringing, the adventures get got into with his friends in his neighborhood, and how the other adult characters/neighbors would play a role in each episode. One episode I remember the most from that time was the episode about Mr. Hyunh finally meeting his daughter because they were separated by the Vietnam war. Sad, the life of an immigrant/refugee. Also, I remember there was an episode where a male neighbor/family friend did not know how to read English because he was illiterate. So Arnold taught him then dropped off somewhere in NYC and he had to learn how to get back to their apartment reading the signs and the NYC transportation system.

Hey Arnold stuck with me a lot when I was growing up and taught me that on surface level no one is what they seemed. I remember one kid in school who wouldn't let anyone over to his house ever. There was a running joke in the class about something stupid, I couldn't remember what. But the real reason is because he only had his mom left after his dad passed away and they were taking care of their mentally disabled aunt who would sometimes (really only if she got really really upset) throw tantrums. Because of the care his mom had to give her sister in law I guess they didn't live in the best home. I remember taking some school work when he missed a few days and seeing his house because his mom let me in. He was so embarrassed and started begging me not to tell anyone. I looked around and just shrugged. It looked like a normal home to me. I tried to tell him he didn't have anything to worry about but he was just upset enough that I promised to keep my mouth shut. That kid is still my best friend

hey Arnold was unique as well bc most if not all focused on kids in a nice home with mom and dad and other friends with nice lives and even if they have an issue(chucky's mom is dead) but everything is okay anyway. Hey Arnold was in the city, his parents are mia, the kids he knows all have legit issues that most inner city kids deal with from addiction to crime to poverty, an inner city school with crap education, e.t.c. it reached a lot of kids who couldn't connect with other shows. By the way, chocolate boy is a genius name. I'm a paramedic and my mother was a crime reporter for a long time... drug dealers in the city were for a long time known as, "the candyman."

yeah, on several occasions the show gets very real, I wouldn't say dark, but also is very nebulous in many things, we don't know what exactly is happening with Helga at home, it seems like it's something really serious , since in a many times through the show, she is shown like she were starving very often, also her gastrointestinal conditions, her depression, all we know is her mom is alcoholic, only because was mentioned by the show creator, and of course is hinted, like the fact Bob is verbally abusive, but for me all Helga's issues are symptomatic of something even more serious, and he has said she had an horrible childhood, but obviously is not explained, what exactly is going on; as it is not known either, Why Sid, Curly and Eugene have mental health issues, where do these issues come from?, Are Sid's parents addicts?, Eugene and Sid dads are present in an 5 season ep. but it seems they are normal caring parents, or maybe they are depicted as crazy characters just because was funny; how low is their neighborhood?, like Bronx N.Y.? Is it plagued with drug related violence?; also as a fan I like to read show creator interviews, and in chat several years ago he said all these kids (I think mainly Helga and the others), in his own words, they would be dark and evil teenagers, so apparently, they in fact are suffering from the issues, you mention above, but I feel the show isn't making those apparent enough to be picked up on, well I understand is just too much for a kids show.

Helga’s situation is probably the darkest theme in Hey Arnold. Most of the time it’s played off as a joke, and Helga’s hilarious comebacks act as comedic relief from the reality of what is actually happening to her. The fact that she is starving most episodes, not knowing if she is going to get a decent amount of food in her lunch box is just heartbreaking. In one episode, you see Miriam passed out on the kitchen counter, as Helga is desperately trying to get in contact with her since she missed her bus. “Helga sleepwalks”, when you see her eating the same snack for days at a time. “Road trip” when her mother almost killed her due to reckless driving, she actually had to take the wheel so they wouldn’t crash, it all happens so fast so it’s hard to get a grip but it really is so sad.. “Helga on the couch” is hands down the best Hey Arnold episode ever made. You see the extent of her abuse. Her parents are okay with the fact that their 3 year old daughter is walking the streets alone, in a not so good neighborhood where she could get hit by a car or worse.. all to watch their 15 year old daughter play piano for a MINUTE. It goes beyond her not being the favorite child, her obsession with Arnold (while she may be in love with him) is a product of her abusive home life, and lack of parental attention. She is desperately trying to search for human contact, but she is too scared to admit it or say something. she is SO terrified of being rejected she can’t even say one thing that is nice, she always catches herself and corrects it. Her body can’t physically handle if she says anything remotely emotional to ANYBODY which makes you frustrated in the moment, but once you really think about it.. you understand. It’s also mentioned in the series that Helga has some sort of gastrointestinal & belly issues, I myself have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder & UC) and it’s hard for me to go out because I always get stomach aches under ANY stress at all. And if I’m in periods of high stress, I can’t eat anything because my stomach will flare, this leads me to believe Helga has so much chronic stress in her life that it has manifested in a gastro issue, or the fact that she goes so long without eating since she doesn’t get fed at home is also leading to belly issues. The poor girl has gone through so much. I really love her character. We are always taught that the bully is ALWAYS the bad guy. Always the enemy. But with Helga you see her be kind, sweet, selfless, loving, polite, & generous on multiple occasions. You see the behind the scenes. You see her as a whole person and I think that is very important. I think Helga as a character can be pretty educational on the topic of child psychology & trauma. I think people really need to pay more attention to Helga and really analyze her because it really is just so tragic. I feel like Helga’s parents could get arrested if they had the police called on them. We never see Bob being physically abusive, but I feel like that could also be the case. Miriam also has an alcohol problem, and didn’t before her marriage. The abuse she endured from Bob probably was the catalyst for her addiction which has caused her to almost KILL her daughter and straight up ignore her presence. I’m so surprised Helga didn’t crack considering her situation. I can’t imagine how alone she must feel. Arnold was her escape because no matter how mean she was to him, MOST of the time, he didn’t fight back. Whenever she needed him, he was there. Guiding her. Giving her advice. He could see right through her. Arnold was really what Helga needed in her life. Without Arnold I have no idea where Helga would be. That’s scary to think about. Where would she put all her time and energy? Without him she would probably would have fallen into a deep dark depression. Arnold doesn’t realize how much of an emotional crutch he is to her. This show is basically Helga observing Arnold, Helga has such a unique story especially for a Nick show. A children’s show. AIMED AT 6-11 year olds. There needs to be more characters like her. She’s important.

A little late to the show, but the episode where Arnold’s friends destroy Pigeon Man’s rooftop was pretty dark too. The part at the end where he says “I have to go. There’s nothing here for me” (paraphrasing) and then flew away with the pigeons left an impression that he actually jumped, especially when it looked like they were flying him towards the sky, or Heaven. @Ousmane Dembélé hardly anyone, including those of our generation, realized it was about childhood traumas, and that it had a second layer of interpretation, I mean at face value is about funny kids, but at the same time, it has a really sad and heavy backdrop, Helga's mom being alcoholic and drug addict, Arnold dealing with absent parents, for example, even a third layer would be existentialism, but what baffles me is what show creator said in chat, that they would be dark and evil and stuff, as teenagers, (I think he was referring to Helga, Sid, Harold and Stinky), That would give the show an even darker and sadder meaning than I thought, I mean that they would pass through troubled teenage years, and with drug problems, Helga for her bad upbringing, her depression, Sid, Harold and Stinky for their low self-esteem, and the economic struggles at home, in addition to living in the city, where is well known, especially in the low neighborhoods like Arnold's, there, kids usually grow up much faster, become troubled kids, and involve in drugs issues and teen delinquency, petty crime, early sexual activity and stuff, in part because they are exposed to hard situations at home like addictions, poverty and intra-familiar violence.
